Rickie Lambert has completed a £3 million transfer from Liverpool to West Bromwich Albion.

The 33-year-old ended his five-year affiliation with Southampton to join the Reds in a £4.5 million move last summer.

Lambert supported Liverpool as a boy and was released as a trainee from 17 years before only 12 months ago and so insisted it was a dream move for him.

But the move never really worked out for Lambert, who scored three goals - including a maiden Champions League strike - in 36 appearances on Merseyside.

Lambert rejected a January deadline day move to Aston Villa, admitting he couldn't bring himself to leave his boyhood club - but he struggled to adapt to Brendan Rodgers' side and was told he would be surplus to requirements earlier this summer, with the Northern Irishman overhauling his attacking options.

Lambert, who found regular opportunities limited at Anfield - starting just 12 games despite having hit double figures for goals and assists the season before, becomes the Baggies' third arrival of the summer.

Tony Pulis has already welcomed James McClean and James Chester to the Hawthorns, with Lambert's switch taking their spending up to £12.5 million.

The Albion becomes the England international's eight career club, after stays with Blackpool, Macclesfield Town, Stockport County, Rochdale, Bristol Rovers, Southampton and Liverpool.

Having played in every tier of English football, Lambert has scored 236 professional goals in 656 appearances so far, including three goals in 11 appaearances for the English national team.

Lambert departure paves way for Benteke to take the no.9 shirt

Baggies' boss Pulis, speaking earlier in the week, confirmed his interest in the striker - whom he said has a "great goalscoring record", good fitness and is desperate to play.

He likened the experienced striker's last year or so to an unused car - insisting that it would be similar to bringing a "brand new car out of the garage" and just putting "a bit of petrol in him and letting him run."

Lambert - who will take the no.17 shirt at West Brom - was hailed as a "good, strong, solid player" by Pulis after the move went through following a successful medical on Friday. He added that they were "very pleased" to have a player of his pedigree on board.

Lambert's departure means that Christian Benteke, who arrived from Aston Villa for £32.5 million, will take the no.9 shirt at Liverpool.

The Belgian secured his move from West Brom's Midlands rivals just over a week ago, but has not yet had his shirt number confirmed after wearing the no.20 at Villa Park.
