Emre Can has admitted that it is good to be back and that he is hoping for a midfield role this season, but ultimately wants to be featuring as much as he can for Liverpool.

The German midfielder returned to training with the Reds earlier this week, after being given an extended break due to his participation in the under-21s European Championship in the Czech Republic.

He returned to action last weekend in the U21s' Steel Park Cup clash against Porto B, featuring for the first-half, and is set to return to the first-team against Swindon Town on Sunday.

And the 21-year-old is keen and eager to get the new campaign, which begins a week on Sunday away at Stoke City, started as soon as possible.

Disappointing Euro's will motivate Can

Can, who was playing for the Germany U21s side during the summer, says that the defeat to Portugal, who beat Germany 5-0, can motivate him this season.

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com, Can said the team had to give more than they did, insisting they only did "okay" and that the semi-final was just a "bad day" for the entire team, where things "didn't quite end" the way in which they had hoped.

Can wants as much game time as possible

Can featured as a defender in a back-three for large parts of last season, despite being a natural midfielder and insisted that he would like to play as a midfielder this season, but with plenty of competition for places - he's happy just to play whatsoever.

He added that the "most important thing" is just to feature in games, which he called his "number one intention."

Asked whether he had a preferred position, he continued that a role in the centre of the park would suit him best - but said that "it is the manager who decides who plays where" and that "we will see where he chooses to play" him.

Can has not been selected in the squad that has travelled to Finland, as he still has to get back to match fitness but he may feature against Swindon as the Reds warm up for their opening day clash versus Stoke.
