Liverpool FC manager Brendan Rodgers was sufficiently impressed with the performances of summer signings Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino on Sunday.

The pair, who amounted to over £60 million, were both handed their first bows of pre-season against Swindon Town in the Reds' final friendly before their season opener next weekend.

Benteke - the club's most expensive addition of the summer - made an impressive start, smashing a volley in from 20-yards after taking down Joao Carlos Teixeira's flick.

Though the League One side pulled level at the County Ground, Sheyi Ojo provided the winner with just three minutes to go - giving Rodgers' side their fifth win in six pre-season games.

But all attention was on Firmino and Benteke, both of whom looked sharp in their first outing for their new club.

Rodgers called Benteke's goal an "incredible" strike and hailed his "wonderful technique" irregardless of the fact that it won't go down on his record.

The Reds' boss was also pleased with those others who came back into the side, such as Firmino and Emre Can - who looked strong in the centre of midfield - and said the afternoon was "pleasing all around" and a "really good exercise."

The trip to Wiltshire acted as the final game to finish off their preparations ahead of the Premier League campaign and Rodgers said it was useful for a number of his squad who needed to stretch their legs.

Manager pleased with Firmino's first performance

The Northern Irishman added that Firmino, who only started training last week, demonstrated his qualities in his 67-minute cameo - explaining his brightness on the ball, his technique and his desire to get forward and create opportunities for himself and his team-mates.

Rodgers said that he was pleased with how the Reds adapted, and stated they "coped very well" - which bodes well for when they continue to improve their fitness and build relationships with their new team-mates.

One particular partnership whom Liverpool supporters are relishing the sight of seeing is Brazilian duo Firmino and Philippe Coutinho, after the no.10 scored against HJK Helsinki in a 2-0 win on Saturday evening.

The manager said that both performances proved how he wanted to "bring back" creativity into his side, and that the pair - in addition to Jordon Ibe and Adam Lallana, who have impressed over the course of pre-season, make things "very exciting" for the club this campaign.

Rodgers satisfied with pre-season preparations

Assessing his side's warm-up games more generally, he said that the players have done brilliantly - in that they never complained of fatigue despite travelling more than 30,000 miles across three continents.

He further added that he was again pleased with how his side got on with their business "on a really hot day" in Swindon, as a number of young faces played their part.

U18s captain Trent Alexander-Arnold was given his first ever chance of mixing with the first-team, playing in a right-back role with Nathaniel Clyne having played the night before and Andre Wisdom now out on loan at Norwich City

Midfielder Arnold was not the only Academy players to feature, as Daniel Cleary got half-an-hour and forwards Ryan Kent and Ojo made accomplished impacts after coming on late into the game.

Rodgers concluded that giving the younger faces in the squad the chance to play with the first-team is "what the club is about" and that it gives him a good idea of who is nearing the more permanent step-up.

He added that Arnold had impressed as early as last year, after training in a practice match as a schoolboy - and that since he had the 16-year-old in his mind - so bringing him in was a simple decision.

Rodgers labelled goalscorer Ojo a "threat" as his strike ultimately gave Liverpool their final victory, and was impressed with how well Kent coped - displaying his pace and quality as he caused the Swindon defence problems.
