Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has rubbished speculation that he is to leave the club during the remainder of the transfer window, and insisted that he's staying on Merseyside to fight for his place.

The 29-year-old hasn't featured competitively in a Red shirt since January, and appears to now be the fourth choice left-back at the club.

A summer castaway

After falling behind Alberto Moreno and Jon Flanagan in the pecking order over the last two years, Brendan Rodgers has been impressed with new signing Joe Gomez at left-back over the summer, and that move has sent Enrique further away from first team action.

This led to rumours of a potential move away for the man who cost £8million from Newcastle United in 2012, rumours that were only fuelled by the decision to leave himself, Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini out of the club's pre-season tour of the Far East.

Those three players appear to be part of the unwanted list, a theory backed up by the recent story that Borini is close to a move to Serie A side Fiorentina.

Ready to fight

Enrique admitted that he is in a "difficult position", partly due to him agreeing that "the club have alienated Balotelli, Borini and me".

Fully aware that "the club wants to sell", Enrique took a firm stance by saying that he still has time remaining on his contract, and he wants to "stay and fight, as I always have".

Money talks

One of the problems for Enrique at Liverpool, that has seen many fans get on his back, is that certain sections of the support don't view him as a player who fights for his place.

Constantly criticised for posting too many pictures of himself on exotic adventures with his girlfriend on social media, many believe that Enrique takes a lackadaisical approach to life as a Liverpool player, taking more interest in his bank balance than the teams results.

The Spaniard didn't do much to dispell those ideas, as he brazenly admitted that "the only teams that can deal with what is paid in England are Real Madrid and Barcelona", and it was due to this that he wishes to "stay here [Liverpool] until my legs stop me".

Adding to this, Enrique revealed that he had "very good offers" to return to his homeland, but the economy is "complicated" which prevents him from pursuing potential moves.
