Jordan Henderson is a major doubt for Liverpool's looming away trip to Arsenal, after being forced off with a foot injury in Monday night's win over Bournemouth.

The newly appointed captain went off in the second half after assisting Christian Benteke's winning goal, and is highly unlikely to be risked for the heavyweight clash at the Emirates Stadium.

Unlikely to make the Arsenal game

It was revealed after the game that Henderson had been taking painkillers in order to play, but hasn't broken a bone in his foot. He has, however, got an area of discomfort on the ball of his right foot, which Liverpool's medical team have been unable to ease as of yet.

The England international hasn't trained with the first team this week, making it difficult for manager Brendan Rodgers to include him in his preparations for the game, when setting up a plan to beat the Gunners on the training pitch.

Behind the scenes, there is hope that Henderson might respond to treatment over the weekend and be fit for Monday's game, however it seems less likely as time progresses.

Who replaces Henderson for the crunch clash?

The topic of who could replace Henderson in the team is one where much debate can be had, however the favourite candidate is Emre Can

Can has the energy and defensive ability to slot into the defensive midfield role that Henderson has occupied in the opening two games, meaning that he would be an extremely handy like for like replacement. The German hasn't started any of the Reds' opening two games, however has put in impressive performances when coming off the substitutes bench in each game.

Another potential option is Lucas, however the Brazilian's time at Liverpool appears to be fading fast, with the rumour mill suggesting that he could well have been sold by the end of the window.

Joe Allen would be another option to come in for Henderson, however the Welshman remains out with an hamstring injury, expected to return in early September.
