Liverpool have been drawn at home to League Two side Carlisle United in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

The draw, which took place on Tuesday night, conjured up some intriguing ties - with Brendan Rodgers' side taking on Carlisle - who knocked out Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road in a 2-1 win in the second round, after beating Chesterfield 3-1 after extra-time in the first.

The Reds, who reached the semi-finals of the competition before they were knocked out in extra-time away at Chelsea last year, will be wary that the last time they took on a fourth-tier side at Anfield in the third round - they lost on penalties to Northampton, back in 2010.

Liverpool vying to maintain unbeaten run against Carlisle

They have met with Carlisle eight times previously, with Liverpool winning six of those games - including a 5-1 home win in the League Cup in 1972. Their last meeting came in 1989, when the Reds triumphed 3-0 away from home in the FA Cup, but they have never lost to the Blues.

Liverpool are the most successful team in the competition, having lifted the trophy eight times in their history - the last time in 2012, when they edged past Cardiff City on penalties at Wembley Stadium.

Carlisle, meanwhile, have only ever finished as semi-finalists - when they fell to West Bromwich Albion and have only reached the third round three times in the last 39 years, making the home side overwhelming favourites.

The game against the Cumbrians will take place on either September 22nd or 23rd, which would mean the game falls between league ties at home against Norwich City and Aston Villa.

With Brendan Rodgers aiming to win silverware as well as finishing inside the top-four this season, the Northern Irishman is likely to be wary of a potential upset to Keith Curle's side.

Elsewhere, there were some extraordinary second round ties, as Sunderland beat Exeter City 6-3, Notts County fell 5-3 to Aston Villa after extra-time and Stoke City lost to Luton Town on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
