Lucas Leiva is set for another season on Merseyside, after Besiktas confirmed that Liverpool don't wish to sell the midfielder before the closure of the transfer window.

With transfer speculation surrounding the Brazilian for yet another Summer, Lucas had been expected to complete a loan move to the Turkish side, with him seemingly no longer a part of Brendan Rodgers' plans.

The signing of James Milner, who demanded to be played in a central role, didn't help his cause, with one of the club's longest serving players being pushed further down the pecking order.

Lucas set to stay

With the deal thought to be close to completion, Besiktas' president Fikret Orman shocked people following the move by releasing a statement that stated Liverpool "do not want him to go" and it is because of this that "there is nothing we [Besiktas] can do".

Despite missing out on Lucas, it does look like the Turkish giants are close to completing a move for another Premier League player, with reports suggesting that they're close to the signature of Victor Valdes.

Why the sudden u-turn?

Much has been made of why Rodgers has decided to keep the defensive midfielder, especially since he seemed cast away from first team action, similarly to the likes of Jose Enrique, Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini.

An action in recent weeks must have changed the Ulsterman's mind, and it may well have been the 0-0 draw against Arsenal on Monday.

With captain Jordan Henderson out of the game thanks to a foot injury, Lucas was callled into action, and delivered a good performance as the Reds ground out an impressive away draw.

Rodgers praised Lucas after the game, insisting that he "was the best we've got" for the defensive midfield position, and that when he requires one, Lucas is his man.

This may come as disappointing news for fans of the Merseyside club, who were hoping a more high profile midfielder, such as Asier Illarramendi, may be bought in his place. That won't be the case now though, with Lucas expected to be part of Liverpool's 25 man squad come September 2nd.
