The footballing Gods shone brightly on Liverpool on Friday morning, after the Reds were handed a relatively straightforward looking Europa Leauge group.

Drawn in Group B, the Reds have been paired with Rubin Kazan (Russia), Bordeaux (France) and FC Sion (Switzerland) in the group stages of the competition.

A kind draw for Liverpool

After they were revealed as being in Pot 2, there had been fears that Liverpool could draw the likes of Napoli, Borussia Dortmund and more in a potential group of death, so they'll be relieved to have avoided these prospects.

Instead of three gruelling looking away trips, that can often be found in European competition, Liverpool will only have their trip to Russia to grumble about, with FC Sion and Bordeaux both positioned at a fairly short distance from Merseyside.

Another bonus for the Reds is that five of their six leauge fixtures following Thursday night Europa League games are at their Anfield home, with the only away game being against local rivals Everton, meaning that they won't have to do any travelling in the aftermath of a European tie.

Can the Reds improve in Europe?

Brendan Rodgers will be hoping to improve on his recent performances in Europe with Liverpool. The Ulsterman could only lead his team to the round of 32 stage in this competition during his first season, and they were knocked out at the same stage last season after coming third in their Champions League group.

However, whether or not we'll see Liverpool field a full strength team during the early rounds remains to be seen, with some suggesting that they should use the competition for squad rotation purposes, and focus their main attentions on the league.

With Southampton and West Ham United both having been knocked out in the qualifying rounds, Tottenham and Celtic are the only other British representatives in the competition.

Spurs were drawn against Anderlecht, Qarabag and AS Monaco, whilst Celtic face Fenerbache, Molde and Ajax.
