Jordan Henderson's troublesome foot injury has kept him out of the England squad for their 2016 UEFA European Championship qualifying fixtures next month.

The Liverpool captain was forced off mid-way through his side's 1-0 win over Bournemouth earlier this month and has yet to return to action, missing a draw away at Arsenal and the Reds' recent defeat to West Ham United.

As a result, Henderson has not been deemed fit enough for the Three Lions' double-header against San Marino and Switzerland at the start of September, as they look to secure their passage into the competition in France next summer.

The 25-year-old will be looking to focus on finding his fitness for the Reds' demanding fixture against Manchester United on September 12, which compatriot Daniel Sturridge is vying to return for.

Brendan Rodgers will be desperate to see the midfielder back amongst his options, with the suspension of Philippe Coutinho, who was sent off against West Ham, narrowing his options already.

Nevertheless, Henderson's team-mates Nathaniel Clyne and James Milner - who have both made impressive starts to their Anfield careers - are included in Roy Hodgson's 22-man selection.

The pair, who arrived from Southampton and Manchester City in the summer, are expected to feature heavily for their country throughout the build-up to Euro 2016 - with England having two extra qualifiers and another two friendlies pencilled in before the tournament, with more expected to be organised.

Rodgers, therefore, will be hoping his side don't suffer any extra injuries - after Daniel Sturridge picked up an issue at the same stage last season and missed significant periods of the campaign due to continual setbacks.

Amongst Hodgson's other selected players are ex-Reds Raheem Sterling, who opened his account for City in their 2-0 win over Watford on Saturday, and Shelvey - who earns his first international call-up since leaving Liverpool for Swansea City two years ago. He made his debut against San Marino as a second-half substitute back in 2012.

England currently top their group with maximum points from the six games they have played so far.
