Centre-back Kolo Touré believes the Liverpool FC team owe it to the supporters to produce an emphatic reaction from Thursday's 1-1 draw with FC Sion when they take on Everton in the Merseyside Derby this weekend.

The veteran Ivorian captained the Reds' changed XI as they saw out a disappointing draw with the Swiss outfit, who deserved their point at Anfield.

Adam Lallana put the home side ahead just a few minutes into the game but lacklustre defending saw Ebenezer Assifuah equalise for the away side, as Brendan Rodgers' charges were left to rue their poor finishing.

Defender highlights disappointment off back of draw

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo afterwards, Touré called it a "frustrating night" and said they had to "kill the game" after creating so many chances.

He conceded that Liverpool didn't finish "well enough" and conceded a "soft goal" to allow their opponents back into the game just 13 minutes after taking the lead.

The defender explained that such mistakes "can cost you" which he explained was exactly what happened against Sion, saying that they "ended up with a point from a game" that they "should have won."

In fact, it was Touré who came closest to helping Liverpool regain the lead - striking the crossbar with an ambitious acrobatic overhead kick at the Kop end in the second-half.

However, his two-year wait for a first goal in a red shirt continues after the effort hit the woodwork and flew over.

He revealed that team-mate Jordon Ibe had told him earlier in the day that he would break his duck against Sion and admitted he "thought he was going to be right" when the effort flew goalwards.

The former Arsenal and Manchester City central defender said he thought it would be his first goal, and only his 18th ever club career goal, adding that it "would have been unbelievable" to net his first goal "in front of the Kop" but said it was "unlucky" because it wasn't Liverpool's night.

Reds must use derby to put things right, says Touré

Touré admitted that such performances have "happened a number of times this season" with the Reds guilty of "not being clinical enough" as well as "giving away soft goals" - vowing that they "have to be better" at scoring goals and defending.

Nevertheless, the 34-year-old dismissed any suggestions that the Merseyside club "under-estimated" Sion, who now top Group B after winning on the opening day.

Instead, he blamed their lack of "killer instinct" and said they had to score the second goal as quickly as possible after scoring to "kill them mentally."

Despite the dour draw, which was met by boos at the final whistle, Touré said that the Reds "need to focus" on the Merseyside Derby - which he said will be a "big, big fight."

Despite the difficulty of the fixture, the defender views the clash as the perfect way to gift the supporters some much-needed positivity - saying that the players "feel that they aren't very happy" and want to "show them" that they want to do well and further insisted they can do so "by beating Everton."
