Danny Ings is desperate to enjoy his first taste of the Merseyside derby when Liverpool make the short journey across Stanley Park to take on Everton this Sunday.

The former Burnley striker has made quite the impression recently, scoring twice in his last four appearances and producing a number of eye-catching performances for Brendan Rodgers' side.

With his displays having earned him a maiden call-up to the senior England squad on Friday afternoon, he is likely to lead the line with Daniel Sturridge at Goodison Park and insists he is relishing a white-hot atmosphere.

Ings relishing first experience of Merseyside derby

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, the 24-year-old said he will be "excited to get out there and perform for the team" if Rodgers selects him from the start.

Having made the switch from Burnley in the summer, Ings added that he has been "striving" to play in games of such magnitude like the Merseyside derby throughout his career and said the home supporters hurling abuse at the Reds will only fuel his desire to do well, specifically stating it will put fire in his belly.

He declared his love for playing in games at grounds with an intense atmosphere but said he is also looking forward to hear the Liverpool supporters, saying they are "always unbelievable" where they play and said they will "get behind" the team.

Ings' closest experience of a derby as hotly-contested as the Merseyside derby was when he scored the winner in Burnley's Cotton Mill derby win over Blackburn in a 2-1 win at Ewood Park in the 2013-14 campaign.

Despite the ecstasy of helping the Clarets to beat their rivals for the first time since 1979, Ings has admitted he can't wait to experience the "special" fixture between Everton and Liverpool.

He said it will be "crazy" and said he hasn't played "in anything as special as this one" - with the Reds looking to extend an unbeaten run of 10 games over their neighbours.

He hailed Burnley's rivalry with Blackburn as "pretty fierce" and said it was "a special moment" to achieve victory for the first time in 35 years because it "meant a lot to the fans" and was "extremely tough."

Asked about the visitors' record going into the clash against Everton, Ings said that they "count for nothing" come lunchtime on Sunday but said that the Liverpool squad hope to "do it for the fans" and for themselves.

He insisted that it is "about the day and handling the occasion" in important games like this one, but said it is "exciting for everyone involved" as the Reds aim to "go into the international break on a high."

Liverpool need to pick up performance level

The Reds arrive into the game under immense pressure with Rodgers coming in for heavy flak after seeing his side win just three of their 10 games in all competitions inside 90 minutes so far this season.

They were left frustrated again on Thursday night as a dull 1-1 draw with FC Sion meant they had taken just one win from a stretch of four Anfield fixtures.

Ings played an hour in the meeting with the Swiss outfit, as Rodgers rested a number of first-team regulars to leave them fresh for the visit to Goodison.

Reflecting on the game, Ings said it was a "frustrating night for everyone involved" but insisted the squad "worked their socks off and created chances" and said it "just wasn't to be."

The Englishman added that they have to "take the positives out" of the game "look forward." He dismissed any suggestions that the Sion draw was a step in the wrong direction, instead stating that it was "another learning curve" and that they were merely "unfortunate" not to take their chances - something he said they must work on.
