Danny Ings is set to have surgery on Tuesday, treating the anterior cruciate ligament tear he picked up in training last week.

The Liverpool striker, 23, was struck down last Wednesday with the injury, and it didn't take long for it to be diagnosed as an ACL tear in the knee, that was likely to keep him out for the season.

It came as a huge blow for Liverpool, with Ings adding to their ever growing injury list, which forced them to start Divock Origi in the 0-0 draw against Spurs, due to Daniel Sturridge and Christian Benteke also being on the treatment table.

Not only that, but the striker, who signed from Burnley this summer, had picked up form. Having scored against Everton, Norwich and Carlisle United within a five game period before getting the injury, Ings had put himself in contention for a place in England's Euro 2016 squad, one that now seems highly in doubt.

Positive news for Ings

However, there was some good news for the forward this week, with doctors revealing that they believed the ACL injury to be a 'clean tear', meaning that it hasn't affected the ligaments and muscles around his knee.

This makes it less likely that Ings will be out for the nine months that was originally diagnosed, and has given him hope of returning before the end of the current season. More will be known once Tuesday's surgery is completed.

Losing Ings wasn't the first injury nightmare that Liverpool, with his problem coming a day after young defender Joe Gomez suffered a similar problem playing for England Under-21's.

Although not as much has been revealed about how long he could be out for, it is thought that Gomez definitely won't return before the end of this season. Like Ings, he's set for surgery later this week.
