Simon Mignolet has agreed a new five-and-a-half-year contract with Liverpool and is only waiting to put pen-to-paper to complete the deal.

Though the goalkeeper's current contract does not run out until 2018, and the Belgian's security as the Reds' first-choice has regularly been questioned recently, the formalities are expected to be finalised within the next few weeks without any problems.

Despite having come in for criticism for a number of poor performances, and high-profile errors, this season - the 27-year-old custodian has been publicly backed by manager Jürgen Klopp since his arrival back in October.

The German has repeatedly insisted that he is not looking to replace Mignolet with a new 'keeper and instead said he is "one of the smartest" he has ever worked with, hailing him as a "good football player" and adding that he is "young enough to develop" and "to improve."

Last season, Mignolet was even dropped in favour of deputy Brad Jones over the Christmas period as previous boss Brendan Rodgers grew tired of his below-par displays, until an injury to Jones handed him the chance to restore his gloves - a chance he took gratefully as he transformed his individual campaign.

They have been linked with Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland, Timo Horn of 1. FC Köln and Barcelona's Marc-André ter Stegen amongst others in recent months, but Mignolet looks set to remain an integral part of Klopp's team for the forseeable future by penning the new deal when the player's representatives are next in England.

Represented by ex-goalkeeper Nico Vaesen along with Kristof Vandersmissen and Guy Vandersmissen of Cherry Sports Agency, Mignolet's new deal will see him earn over £50,000-per-week according to reports.

Klopp backing Mignolet to be his long-term No.1?

The Belgium international - who kept more Premier League clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in 2015 - arrived from Sunderland in the summer of 2013, signed by Rodgers to replace the out-of-form Pepe Reina, and becomes the third player to sign a new contract since Klopp came in.

Adam Bogdan's recent error away at Exeter City in a 2-2 draw with the League Two outfit in the third round of the FA Cup, which followed an equally as amateur error in a loss at Watford, seemed to suggest Mignolet's No.1 spot was secure.

But that was somewhat dismissed by the return of Danny Ward, who was recalled from a successful season-long loan at Aberdeen, where he had played in every single Scottish Premier League game for the Dons.

Ward's recall may just mean Bogdan is punished for his mistakes and pushed to third-choice but, given the regular game time he was getting in Scotland, there may also be the opportunity for Ward to challenge with Mignolet for a regular place between the sticks.

It remains to be seen whether Klopp will look to strengthen his goalkeeping options in the summer and find a goalkeeper to be the new No.1 or at the very least compete with Mignolet, though the former Sunderland man will be keen to solidify his position throughout the remainder of the current campaign.
