Liverpool will face Manchester City in the final of the Capital One Cup at Wembley Stadium on February 28.

Jürgen Klopp's side did their part by booking their place in the final of the competition for the 12th time on Tuesday night. Simon Mignolet proved the hero at Anfield as he saved two penalties in a shoot-out after the Reds had drawn 1-1 with Stoke City over 180 minutes and extra-time, Marko Arnatouvić's strike bringing the Potters level after Jordon Ibe's first-leg winner.

City, meanwhile, took on Everton trailing 2-1 from the first-leg, but a 3-1 second-leg win at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night was enough for them to book a Wembley showdown with Liverpool as they won 4-3 on aggregate

The final - the 56th in the history of the League Cup - in has been scheduled for a 4:30pm kick-off at the national stadium, with Sky Sports broadcasting the game live in the UK.

Reds hoping to win competition a ninth time next month

Liverpool, the most successful team in the competition's history with eight triumphs from 11 finals, have beaten Carlisle United, Bournemouth, Southampton and Stoke to get this far - whilst City have pushed past Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Hull City and of course, Everton.

This showdown represents Klopp's first cup final since taking over at Anfield in October, but he has already locked horns with Manuel Pelligrini's charges - leading his side to a stunning 4-1 win at the Etihad in November thanks to Eliaquim Mangala's own goal and strikes from Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Martin Skrtel.

Reds' Merseyside Derby to be rescheduled

Liverpool and City take each other on in the league just three days after going head-to-head in the League Cup final, whilst the Reds' Merseyside Derby meeting with Everton, which was originally played on the same date as the cup final, will be rescheduled.

The game also sees Raheem Sterling go up against his former club Liverpool for just the second time since the promising England international left for Manchester in a controversial £49 million move in the summer.

Klopp's side are in the final of the competition for the first time since 2012 and will hope the four weeks' until the final allow a number of their key players to return from injury for the big occasion.
