Liverpool have added an extra friendly to their existing 2016-17 pre-season schedule with a fixture to face AS Roma in St Louis, Missouri.

The Reds were already pencilled in to play two matches whilst in the United States, as they take part in the International Champions Cup for the first time since 2014.

But in between clashes with AC Milan in California and a glamour fixture with Barcelona at Wembley Stadium, Jürgen Klopp's side will face Serie A outfit Roma in a non-ICC tie.

Liverpool play Milan in Santa Clara just two days earlier but after which will then travel over 2,000 miles to the 46,000-capacity Busch Stadium in Missouri, home of Major League Baseball's St Louis Cardinals.

Roma, who finished third in the Italian top division having lost less games than even champions Juventus, and the Reds have not faced off competitively since 2002 in the Champions League group stages.

At a specially-held press conference in the US, Liverpool's chief commercial officer Billy Hogan insisted that the club are "very much looking forward" to playing in front of their fans "from Missouri and the wider Midwest."

He said, with the history of Busch Stadium having held MLB All-Star games and World Series games, it's "only fitting" that "an historic club like Liverpool" should play there when visiting what he called a "terrific sports city."

It will continue a running theme of the Reds' meetings with Roma, having played them at Boston's Fenway Park on their last two pre-season tours of America in 2012 and 2014, losing on both occasions.

With Liverpool now having eight total warm-up fixtures, the first four of which are on home soil against Football League opposition, it is not anticipated that the club will announce any more friendlies for the summer - meaning their campaign finishes against Barcelona.
