Liverpool will turn their attentions away from Ben Chilwell if Leicester City continue to ask for £10 million for the young left-back.
The Reds had an initial £7 million bid, £5 million up-front plus a further £2 million in add-ons, rejected by the Premier League champions - who are demanding an increased offer for the highly-rated defender.
Jürgen Klopp sees the 19-year-old as the perfect understudy to the much-maligned Alberto Moreno, whose first-choice spot is under threat after an inconsistent season last year.
The German's desire to sign Chilwell comes courtesy of a glowing recommendation from Huddersfield Town manager David Wagner, who worked with Klopp at Borussia Dortmund and remains close friends with the Reds boss.
Chilwell played eight times for the Terriers whilst on loan in the Championship last season and earned rave reviews for his fine displays.
But though Chilwell is keen on a move to Anfield in search of more regular first-team minutes, Liverpool aren't willing to meet the Foxes' asking price for a player who has yet to make his league debut.
Reds to give up on Chilwell if Leicester refuse to budge
Despite being viewed as one of the club's most promising youngsters, England Under-21 international Chilwell has so far only made three senior appearances at the King Power Stadium, all of which have come in domestic cup competitions.
He has just one year left to run on his contract at Leicester, who has rejected a new deal at the club, and would be likely to see out the final year should he fail to seal a move.
The Leicester City Academy graduate was a part of the England U21 squad that won the Toulon Tournament in May, but dropped out through injury after a 4-0 win over Paraguay, their third of four group games.
Liverpool have already identified Hull City's Andrew Robertson as one of several potential alternatives, with the 22-year-old Scotland international likely to command a smaller fee despite his obvious promise.
Robertson played in 42 of the Tigers' 46 Championship games last season as they sealed an immediate return to the top-flight after beating Sheffield Wednesday in the play-off final.
It is thought that despite frequent links, Jonas Hector of 1. FC Koln does not fit Klopp's requirements and is not being considered as an option.
