Manchester City stopper Joe Hart is celebrating becoming the youngest England goalkeeper to reach 50 caps for his country.

Hart, 27, joins Peter Shilton, David Seaman, Gordon Banks, Ray Clemence and former City man David James on the Three Lions' half-centurions list, but has some way to go before he catches Shilton's record of 125 senior appearances.

After reaching the milestone in England's 1-1 friendly draw with Italy in Turin, Hart spoke of his sense of pride at continuing to represent his country.

"I’m really proud," Hart said shortly after the game. "I was proud of my first cap, I was proud to represent the Under-21s, and 50 caps at my age is good. I want to keep going, that’s not the end for me. I just want to keep going, keep playing well for my club and country and rack them up."

Hart also spoke of the inspiration taken from his opposite number in the Italy goal, 37-year-old Gianluigi Buffon.

"I’m still learning my game and I’m still watching the likes of Buffon and the way he goes about his business at 37 years old. I’ve got a lot more learning to do and I want to do it in this team. [Buffon’s caps total of 147] is a long way off, but it’s definitely a night to celebrate a terrific goalkeeper and a legend of the game, someone I personally look up to and it’s inspirational to see.”

However, despite being behind at half-time to Southampton forward Graziano Pellè's glancing header, Hart believes England should have won the game after an improved second-half performance.

"It could have - and should have - been a victory," he continued. "We had enough chances. Buffon is a fantastic goalkeeper. He made some big saves for them. It was promising but we want to win those games. A 1-1 is nice after being 1-0 down but we’d like to have won."

Hart made his England debut back in 2008, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 friendly victory against island minnows Trinidad & Tobago.
