Manchester City's Ladies have made history - qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, for the first time in the club's history.

Just 24 hours after Sergio Agüero's five-goal haul saw the Citizens shoot back up to the top of the Premier League table, Nick Cushing's ladies have sealed a perfect end to an exciting football season in the women's game.

City's Ladies enjoy inspired form after World Cup exploits

Some inspired form off-the-back of a hugely successful World Cup campaign for England, saw the sky Blues sky-rocket up the table gradually, after consistently grinding out results against various opposition. Seven wins out of a possible eight in the league, following their third-placed finish at this summer's World Cup in Canada, pushed them into unfamiliar waters near the top of the table.

Sitting in sixth place beforehand, they were constantly flirting with the top four and rivalled the likes of Arsenal and Sunderland for an all-important place in the top two of the division - in the Champions League spots for next term.

Chelsea win this year's title, sky Blues finish second

Unsurprisingly, a record crowd of 3,180 spectators were in attendance for their final fixture of the season - ending on a high with a 2-1 victory over Notts County this evening. Goals from Nikita Parris (on-loan from Everton) and in-form Isobel Christiansen put the hosts ahead before the half-time interval, and that's how the scoreline stayed despite a second-half filled with opportunities for either side.

Due to their rather dramatic assault towards the top of the table, and Chelsea's inconsistent displays at times, it meant they could mathematically win the league title itself - provided the Blues slipped up against Sunderland on the final day. Unfortunately for City though, Emma Hayes' side were far from unconvincing - running out as 4-0 victors on the afternoon, including a well-taken brace by Fran Kirby; one of England's shining lights back in Canada.

Result aside, City were not expecting to get as far as they did in truth. A second-placed finish, all things considered, is a great achievement for the ladies - and you'd expect them to rival Chelsea properly for the title next term, provided all of their players are fit. Toni Duggan, Christiansen, Daphne Corboz and club captain Steph Houghton to name but a few, things are promising at the City Academy Stadium.
