A real six-pointer in terms of how the group standings would look as a result, Manuel Pellegrini's men excelled with a fine away display in Europe to seal their place in the knockout rounds amongst Europe's elite - with two spare matches to play.

It was the night that Manchester City certainly would have had dreams of tonight - within the opening two minutes of their crunch Champions League fixture, they were on the front foot in Seville and almost broke the deadlock. Fernandinho's driving run was worthy of a goal, but his long-range strike flashed narrowly wide in the end.

A dream start, fantastic result

They were soon back for more though, as Fernandinho again at the heart of it all, sending Raheem Sterling through with an excellent defence-splitting pass leaving the Englishman to slot home and break the deadlock in style.

His first Champions League goal, it certainly meant a lot to the former Liverpool man, wheeling away in celebration as City had started proceedings quickly and with relentless intent.

Then just three minutes later, Sterling set Bony up for a shot which was parried by the hosts' goalkeeper - only for Fernandinho to pounce on the rebound with a header. At this point City were firmly in the driving seat, despite a reply from the hosts, a headed effort at the back-post by French full-back Benoit Tremoulinas, City continued to keep driving forward.

Two-goal lead restored

It didn't take long for the Blues to restore their two-goal lead, a pass cut-back from Jesús Navas which found Wilfried Bony in space, leaving the Ivorian to finish off with a typical poacher's finish, slotting home into the bottom corner.

The second-half rolled around with Sevilla looking to take a hold of the game early on, but truth betold it was a leisurely affair for City, which was exactly how the travelling sky blue faithful wanted it as they looked to preserve their two-goal lead, which in truth they managed with ease.

Rico among the thick of the action

Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico made a superb reflex save to deny Fernandinho 10 minutes after the interval after fine approach play by Sterling, who caused nightmares for the Rojiblancos all night, before Yaya Touré was inches away from scoring a fourth with 20 minutes to go, only for the Ivorian's curling effort to narrowly skewer wide of the target.

The near misses proved irrelevant though, as the sky Blues romped to victory very comfortably at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, a result that also put an end to Sevilla's run of 10 straight home victories in Europe.
