The most likely players to take up the mantle of captain you would think are current Dutch captain Robin van Persie and long serving player Wayne Rooney who is in line for the England captaincy as well. Both are more than up for the job, however it’s a tough decision for Van Gaal who may fear of favouring one over the other which could cause an unnecessary problem if either of the egos take the decision poorly.

It is still unclear on what Van Gaal plans to do, it has been suggested that Michael Carrick would have been a likely solution; this has been put in doubt with the English midfielders lay off for around 10-12 weeks. It would be strange if the Dutch boss would wait that long after spending limited time with the former spurs man.

On tour in all three games a midfielder has been captain suggesting further that the new boss will turn away from his star forwards and hand the role to a player in the middle of the park. Tom Cleverly wore the armband once; it would be very unlikely for him to be handed it. Darren Fletcher also had a chance not once but twice, however Fletcher will need to keep up performances and keep fit as Van Gaal has previously stated he needs a captain who will play in almost every game.

It will be tough for Van Gaal to decide and a decision may not be taken until right up until the start of the season, many have stated a captain isn’t important as you have various leaders on the pitch but to Van Gaal it is important; the decision will not be taken lightly.

So we can keep guessing and predicting who will get the honour, but we could be surprised in who the Dutch boss picks, he may even give a youngster chance to lead the side for years to come. Look this space.
