As the 2013/14 Barclays Premier League season ended, it was obvious that Manchester United needed to rebuild over the summer. And boy have they done so. United have signed seven players during the summer, reinforcing the defence, center of midfield, wing play, and attack. The net spend for United this summer will end at £136,900,000.

Entering Deadline Day, United had confirmed an agreed fee for Blind, but personal terms and a medical were yet to be completed. There were rumors abounding that another central midfielder, one of Nigel de Jong, William Carvalho, or Arturo Vidal might be signed before the window shut. However, as United fans awoke today the news broke that they were going to sign Colombian striker Radamel Falcao.

In the last several days, Falcao was rumored to be heading to Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester City. United hadn't even been rumored to sign him, but today chief executive Ed Woodward completed the signing of a second world class player in less than a week.

As the day wore on, and Sky Sports continued their seemingly never-ending coverage, rumors continued to abound about whether United would sign or unload other players. Both Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck continued to be named as potential transfers, but Cleverley's proposed moves to either Aston Villa or Everton both fell through due to the Englishman asking for too much in wages. Meanwhile, Welbeck who had already been training at Arsenal's training ground with the England squad conducted a medical before a proposed move to Arsenal.

As the close of the window loomed larger, news broke that several youth teamers would also be heading out the door. Midfielder Tom Lawrence, who made a hugely impressive first team debut last May, moved to Leicester City on a permanent deal while midfielder Nick Powell moved to Leicester on loan. Cleverley it appeared had agreed a deal at several times, and at the end of the day he was at Aston Villa on loan, news which didn't break until morning. Meanwhile, Falcao and Welbeck still had not been announced at the close of the window. As the window closed, Twitter exploded, and television journalists frantically tried to find out if a deal had been completed before reporting both clubs had gotten extensions to the deadlines to complete the transfers. The two deals weren't completed until more than an hour after the window closed, but both got done eventually. Welbeck will reportedly now be on wages of £100,000 a week at Arsenal while Falcao will earn in excess of £350,000 per week at United.
