Having completed his three-match suspension for a dismissal against West Ham, fans were relishing at the thought of their captain returning to the squad in time for the coveted Manchester derby.

However, hopes of another wonder-goal against their local rivals have been hindered by a potential injury suffered in training by Wayne Rooney.

The 29-year-old had reportedly been seen limping at a promotional event at Old Trafford on Monday afternoon, and could miss out on a trip to the Etihad Stadium, in which the Red Devils will hope to add to their unbeaten streak of four matches.

After Manchester City suffered a shock defeat to high-flyers West Ham United at the weekend, Rooney will be desperate to feature, with Radamel Falcao expected to return from injury having sat out the clash with league leaders Chelsea.

With Louis van Gaal openly speaking about how the commercial demands at Old Trafford could have a negative impact on his ability to lead his side to success, the Dutchman will hope the event has not aggravated any potential injury to Rooney.

Summer signing Luke Shaw has previously highlighted the significance his feels his fellow England international has within the side, and can’t wait for him to return to the side, saying:

“It’s something I think he’s looking forward to. You know Wayne – he hates sitting on the sidelines watching and he’s said that a few times. I’m really looking forward to having him back.”

Despite the fact Manchester United have been unbeaten in the absence of Rooney, it is expected he would go straight into the starting line-up, should he prove fit in time for Sunday.
