Manchester United midfielder Anderson will have to recuperate his fitness should he have a future at Old Trafford, according to manager Louis van Gaal.

He's now coming back. He was injured but he's training now with the team. I cannot say what had happened last year but in my four months here, he's had a lot of injuries.

The 26-year-old midfielder spent the second half of last season in the Serie A, featuring seven times on loan for Fiorientina, and has since managed just 20 minutes of Premier League action for the Red Devils.

Having joined United under Sir Alex Ferguson from Portuguese outfit Porto back in 2007, the Brazilian has since been linked with a move away from the Theatre of Dreams in the upcoming winter transfer market.

And boss van Gaal has claimed he must show an encouraging attitude should he represent the club again, having last featured in a goalless draw with Burnley back in August. He said:

"He's now coming back. He was injured but he's training now with the team. I cannot say what had happened last year but in my four months here, he's had a lot of injuries.

"So I cannot judge him but when he trains he trains at a good level. He's not always fit and that is more his problem now. I can't pick him now because you have to be fit.

"For the first three months the culture of a trainer is fitness. That is the smallest thing you can demand. Professional league fitness. Fitness is the most important thing. First you have to show your fitness. Not for just one day but for several weeks."

The Dutchman had previously blasted the fitness of recent signing Luke Shaw during pre-season; and having progressed to become one of the side’s most influential defenders, Anderson could still have a chance to resume his career with the Manchester giants.
