Manchester United's Portuguese defender Marcos Rojo has picked up an injury in training says boss Louis van Gaal.

The Dutch manager revealed that the £15 million summer signing had been left out of the selection for United's 3-0 victory over bitter rivals Liverpool.

The Reds put in a fine performance with David De Gea being named man of the match after producing 8 saves of the highest quality. The Spanish keeper played behind a back three of Jonny Evans, Michael Carrick and Phil Jones, Rojo's replacement.

"It happened yesterday so we will have to wait and see," said Van Gaal. "I don't think it's healthy but I am not a doctor."

It is believed that van Gaal was referring to an incident in November when he said an injury sustained by Daley Blind would keep him out for six months when in fact it ruled him out for up to 6 weeks.

The club's record signing Angel Di Maria was also out of the huge fixture as well as defenders Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling. Jesse Lingard also missed the encounter, although he would have been unlikely to feature even in full fitness.

United now have an injury list which amounts to six players, the third most in the Premier League. However, in contrast to the 11 players injured in late November, it is positively small and van Gaal will be hoping to decrease it further as he looks to build a solid defence in the New Year.
