Premier League all-time top scorer Alan Shearer says that Manchester United striker Radamel Falcao can 'smell goals' and that his introduction for the Reds against Liverpool was 'perfect timing'.

Falcao, 28, was brought on for United captain Wayne Rooney in the 78th minute by Louis van Gaal.

Shearer, speaking to the BBC, said “Radamel Falcao, what a great time it is for him to come on. Liverpool are leaving gaps in defence left right and centre. He can smell goals.”

The Colombian striker failed to score his second goal of the season in his breif 12 minute appearance but managed two shots on target, both saved by Brad Jones.

Though he didn't add to his tally, he looked promising and Louis van Gaal will be hoping that he can prove his worth in the next few games.

The Dutch manager has Falcao on loan until the end of the season from Monaco but with the option to buy the striker needs to quickly add to his under-whelming number of goals for the season.

United play Aston Villa next week and with the Villains falling disastrously after a positive start to the season Falcao may have the opportunity to add to his one goal this season.
