Manchester United are confident that their in-form goalkeeper David De Gea will sign a new contract with the club.

De Gea's current contract runs out in the summer of 2016 and United are desperate to keep one of the finest keepers in the Premier League at the club and away from the prying eyes of Real Madrid.

He was signed for the Reds by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011 on a five-year-deal and the BBC have reported that the Spaniard who arrived from Atletico Madrid will sign a new contract, putting an end to the rumours surrounding a transfer to Real Madrid.

Senior club sources speaking to BBC said they were comfortable and relaxed about the situation although they refused to reveal whether contract talks had begun.

With only 18 months left on his deal it would be standard for the club to begin talks with the Spaniard and with rumours circulating of a huge money move back to Madrid they will want to tie up a deal quickly.

De Gea was in fantastic form against Liverpool on Sunday making 8 fantastic saves and told the media that he was happy at United. He did, however, refuse to rule out a move to Los Blancos.

“It’s not the moment to think of my future." he said.

"It’s the moment to think about Manchester as we are not in a good moment.

“I’m happy there and feel very loved by the fans. I’m focused on doing well.”

United and England captain Wayne Rooney was full of praise for De Gea, who arrived at Old Trafford from Real's local rivals Atletico for £18.9 million in 2011.

"David is important for us," said Rooney. "His performances have been fantastic."

De Gea has made an average of 2.44 saves a game after playing every single minute of the Premier League season so far with 39 saves in total, the 5th most in the Premier League.

He is earning the plaudits now but had a shaky start to his Manchester United career, bringing criticism from former United captain Gary Neville and rumours circulating that United would try to get rid of the 'flop' just one year after signing him.

"To play in goal at Manchester United at 20 is difficult. We knew it might take time. But he worked on his game and it shows." Rooney told the BBC.

"He is not as tall as some other keepers, but his spring and reach is really long. He is also more vocal now.

"Edwin van der Sar had the best years of his career with us when he was in his late 30s, so David has got a great future ahead of him."
