Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has praised fellow teammate Michael Carrick, asserting his respect for the England international for his inspiration to younger players.

The 25-year-old described the Red Devils’ vice-captain as “one of the best players I’ve ever played with”, while claiming his composure makes him one of the most important players in the squad, both on and off the field.

Carrick joined the Manchester outfit from Tottenham Hotspur back in 2006, and has been ever-present in the squad since his £18 million switch. The 33-year-old has gone on to feature almost 400 times under Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, and has scored 22 goals since making his debut at Charlton Athletic in August 2006.

"He always gives us calmness; he's a very calm guy when he's playing. He gives me confidence," said Herrera.

"He is very good for the young players because he always tries to help, not necessarily with words but with his attitude and his calmness.

"He is one of the best players I've ever played with and a very good professional," adds the Spaniard. "We can all improve by looking at him and what he does. I feel lucky to play with him."

The 31-time internationally capped midfielder has represented the club 13 times this season, with all but one appearance seeing him start in the Premier League campaign.

The Red Devils have never lost a game with Michael Carrick featuring this season.
