Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is being monitored by Manchester United, as Rafael Benitez is expected to take over at the Spanish club.

Benitez's arrival could see several players' futures in doubt, and the French striker could be a makeweight in a deal struck by the clubs as Madrid continue to change David de Gea rumours.

Benzema, who scored 22 goals in 46 appearances, would cost United around £40m, however they will have to fight off competition from Arsenal, who are also keen on the striker.

The Frenchman could be an ideal addition to the side, after the departure of Radamel Falcao, and the low-tallies of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney last season.

Rooney, van Persie, Falcao and James Wilson only managed to score 26 goals between them, which is further evidence United must reinforce their striking power if they're to challenge on all fronts next season.

Benzema, aged 27, has won the Champions League, La Liga, Copa Del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup during his time at Madrid, and also won four French titles during his spell at Lyon.

The striker is at the peak of his career and registered 11 assists last season, as well as his 22 goals. Van Gaal will be interested in adding such a versatile striker to his squad; a striker who can score all kinds of goals, who is technically very good and can hold the ball and bring others into play, as well as working hard for the side.

With Robin van Persie's future in the air, and Rooney's goal tally slowly decreasing every season, Benzema ticks all the boxes for United and Van Gaal.

However, United will be getting another striker from Madrid, in the form of Chicharito, who's loan spell has expired at the Bernabeau.

Due to United's striking crisis, Van Gaal may give Chicharito the opportunity to prove himself in pre-season before deciding whether he should leave the club permanently.
