Manchester United midfielder Ashley Young has edged past Ander Herrera and Chris Smalling to pick up the clubs Player of the Month award for May.

The award was voted by the United supporters and Young was finally rewarded after many stand out performances towards the end of this season.

The 29-year-old was quick to thank the fans that voted for him via his twitter page saying: "Thanks to all the fans who voted, nice way to finish my season."

The England international received 57% of the votes, which capped off a brilliant month for the midfielder. Young created three goals in May including two in the crucial 2-1 win over Crystal Palace last month - a game that sealed Champions League football for the Reds.

When talking about his season, Young said: "I’ve really enjoyed playing football again. I’ve kicked on and enjoyed every minute of this season."

Young has been a stand out performer towards the end of the season which included a man of the match performance against rivals Manchester City which saw him score as well as assist two in their 4-2 win in April.

Young will now hope his performances for Manchester United can get him back into the England squad as he hasn't featured for country since September 2013.
