Louis van Gaal has already managed Gregory van der Viel and the former Ajax star was part of the Netherlands squad that finished third in the past 2014 World Cup.

Manchester United are clearly looking to improve their defensive end as that is one of the areas the squad needs to strengthen, in case they want to return to being Premier League title contenders. Rafael and Chris Smalling were less than impressive as right-backs and even though Manchester United were set to target Dani Alves, the Brazilian ended up signing a new deal that will keep him at FC Barcelona until the 2016-17 season.

If not Dani Alves, will it be van der Wiel?

After Alves was taken off the market, United are set to focus on other names and Gregory van der Wiel appears as a viable target, both because of his price - he's not expected to be an expensive player - and because of his talent, as he's already proven at the highest level.

He was a solid performer for Ajax and he has continued his good form with Paris Saint-Germain, where he has become an important player on the right side of the pitch.

According to reports, van der Wiel could be had for a sum that wouldn't break the bank at United, and he would definitely be a better option than both Rafael and Smalling - Rafael is seemingly more suited to be a back-up while Smalling is most certainly better suited for the centre-back role.

No move has been made yet but the 27-year-old Dutch defender is clearly on the team's radar. Based on what the team needs and the resources available, van der Wiel would be an excellent signing that would drastically improve the team's defensive line for the upcoming season.
