Former-Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has backed Victor Valdes to be David de Gea's replacement at Old Trafford.

Latest reports have suggested De Gea will leave the club in the next couple of weeks as Real Madrid look to sign him before they jet off to Australia for their pre-season tour.

The imminent departure of the Spaniard means United are eyeing up replacements for him. Despite talk of Jasper Cillessen and Hugo Lloris being targeted by United, van der Sar feels that "maybe they have the solution already in-house in Victor Valdes."

Van der Sar backs Valdes at United

The Champions League winning United 'keeper said that "it depends whether they are looking for someone with reaction saves or someone who is commanding and a more outfield type of player" as he backed Valdes to take over from De Gea.

Van der Sar said that "if your team plays further away from goal and you have a goalkeeper who likes to protect his six-yard box, then the match will not be there."

He continued, saying that "Barcelona played a lot away from goal and that is something Van Gaal finds important."

In terms of being a good judge for a De Gea replacement at Old Trafford, van der Sar is as good as any to do so having been one of the best goalkeepers in the club's history, he says that "Valdes has a lot of experience and a great pedigree."

Valdes could be a perfect De Gea replacement

Valdes came to United in January on a free transfer, having been out for almost a year with a ligament injury. Yet he has recovered well since returning and played in the last two games of United's season, with De Gea picking up an injury.

A big effort was made by Louis van Gaal to get Valdes to come to United and to get him back to full fitness and it may just be that he saw him as De Gea's replacement at that point.
