Manchester United have asked Spanish side Real Madrid about a summer deal for defender Raphael Varane.

The French international has developed well beyond his years into one of the best young defenders on the continent but has yet to really hold down a consistent place within the first-team and United could turn his head with an offer of a starting spot in the heart of defence.

This isn’t the first time that United have been linked with the 22-year old as they were in for him and could have signed him before the intervention of France and Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane ensured his move to Spanish capital.

It is likely that Madrid will reject any move for the defender but his addition would soften the blow for United as it looks increasingly likely that star player David De Gea is going to make the switch to the Bernabeu at some point in the very near future according to numerous reports.

This wouldn’t be the first time that Madrid have said no to United’s advances for one of their star players with supposedly out of favour forward Gareth Bale who has been heavily linked with a return to England with the Red Devils.

United are apparently ready to spend big money for a second consecutive summer to help fill in the gaps and central defence is a massive gap that has been needing to be filled for many years.

The Manchester club have been linked with numerous players over the past few weeks to help solidify their defence with names such as; Nathaniel Clyne, Matt Hummels and Nicolas Otanmendi all been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal isn’t the only one monitoring the situation between Varane and Madrid with Bayern Munich and ex-Madrid manager Jose Mourinho a huge fan of the youngster.
