Manchester United legendary striker Andy Cole has said that Real Madrid's Karim Benzema would be a perfect player to bring to Old Trafford and partner for Wayne Rooney.

The Frenchman has been linked with a move to United this summer with the club reportedly asking about his availability and could be used as part of deal to bring United keeper David de Gea to the Bernabeú.

Cole stated: "I like him [Benzema], he’s a very good player and played at the highest level for years. He’s done it at international level and (you) look at that and say that could definitely work, him and [Wayne] Rooney."

Benzema has amassed 87 goals in his 188 appearances for the Spanish giants since his move from Ligue 1 side Lyon in the summer of 2009. However, he could possibly see himself on the fringes of the first-team when next season comes around as new manager Rafael Benítez looks to play Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo as his number nine in a more attacking position as opposed to being deployed as a winger.

The second-highest goal scorer in Premier League history also spoke about over potential targets that United have been linked with, he focused on Harry Kane in particular and insisted that the striker who scored 31 goals last season should stay at Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham Hotspur side.

He added: "He's had a brilliant first season, but then can he come to Man United, and if it is true for £40m, and bring to Man United what Man United need? I think the kid is talented, we have to be honest. He's had half-a-season where everything went for him. Penalties at the 'keeper and rebounds are coming straight to his feet.

On Kane's development and whether it's a step too big at the moment, Cole admitted that although Kane has done well in a breakthrough season, it'd be unfair to join the Red Devils, especially with Louis van Gaal needing a striker to spearhead their attack for next season and beyond.

"He's scored some goals but to take that leap - because your second season in the Premier League is always tough - to leave Tottenham and come to Man United and for Manchester United to pin all their hopes on him, for the money and if it did happen, that's a hell of a lot of pressure. Man United need to compete in Europe and the championship as well. He's a baby, still learning his trade."
