Manchester United and England centre-back is set to be handed a new four-year contract at Old Trafford, with his deal at the moment set to expire next summer.

Jones to be offered new contract

Reports claim that Jones will agree similar terms to that of United and England defensive colleague Chris Smalling, taking his wage up to £80,000 a week.

Jones and Smalling the future for United

When both fit last season Jones and Smalling were seen as Louis van Gaal first choice partnership at the centre of United’s defence. Smalling believes that he and his partner have a good partnership and that it will only get better the more they play together.

With one-year left on his current deal and United being linked with a host of centre-backs already this summer, Jones may have been worried about whether he was going to a new deal at Old Trafford.

Jones joined United in June 2011 after impressive displays for Blackburn Rovers. It is believed that Jones impressed Sir Alex Ferguson with his commitment and leadership skills as Blackburn held United to 1-1 draw on the day the Reds clinched the Premier League title at the end of the 2010/11 season.

Jones known for his physical build has played in a number of positions for both Man United and England. Though he feels he is a centre-back, he has also be used as a right-back and as the defensive shield in midfield by both club and country.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes recently said he doesn’t believe that Jones is clever enough to play at centre-back for club or country and right-back could be the best position for him in the long-run. Scholes believes that when Jones has been dragged out of position too much when he comes up against clever centre-forwards.
