According to reports, the next player to sign a new contract at Manchester United will be Ashley Young, whose current deal runs out next summer. This comes after new deals for Chris Smalling and Phil Jones in recent weeks.

Young had a tremendous season last year and was one of the surprise successes under Louis Van Gaal, as he became a key figure in the Dutchman's system. Van Gaal holds high praise for Young and rightly so, due to his versatility in his formation.

Van Gaal very pleased with Young

Van Gaal praised the attitude of Young, saying: “He is a player who wants to perform what you say."

Players have been known to be discarded by the boss due to his style, though this isn't the case with Young: "I think he fits good in my profile."

Van Gaal went on to commend Young for being so versatile, “We have played also with wing-backs and I think that is his best position."

“Now I use him as a winger and he does a very good job," he added. "I am pleased with him.”

Memphis Depay's arrival means more competition for Young

Despite the arrival of Memphis Depay already this summer, Young will still be rewarded with a new three-year contract by the club.

It has worked out well for the former Aston Villa man, because it looked like when Van Gaal first took over last summer he would be one of the first players sold. However he has proven everyone wrong to deserve the new contract.

Young has totally changed many people's opinion, as last year he looked destined for the exit door at United. Now those same people are overjoyed he wasn't sold on because he really was one of the better players for United last season.

The United faithful will hope he can push on from here and do well again next season. Young will hopefully sign the new contract before the team go on tour so that he is fully focused on his performances in the coming months.
