Javier Hernandez is set to miss pre-season after the Manchester United forward broke his collar bone in Mexico’s friendly with Honduras.

The Mexican had surgery on the injury on Thursday in Houston and it is expected to keep him out for up to four weeks.

This will mean that the 27-year old will miss both United’s pre-season tour of America and the Gold Cup with Mexico, which is to be played in the United States and Canada between and July 7 and 26.

Will Hernandez be on his way out?

This a big blow to the striker as he looked to impress manager Louis Van Gaal and find his way back into the Red Devils starting XI, after falling out of favour last season which saw him make a deadline day loan move to La Liga side, Real Madrid.

A statement from the Mexican football federation read: "Javier Hernandez's surgery ended successfully," with the United striker now "in post-operative recovery.”

Hernandez has made 154 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 59 goals since his move from Guadalajara in 2010. The Mexican is still been linked with moves away from Old Trafford, with just one year left on his current contract, both Juventus and Inter Milan are interested.

Mexico physician Gerardo Aguilar stated that Hernandez "underwent a successful operation," and that he has "very high expectations for his rapid recovery," which could see him back in training in "four weeks."

Louis Van Gaal wants fresh faces to Old Trafford

Hernandez is just one of a few United strikers that are facing the exit door with Robin Van Persie also been linked with a move away from Manchester. Van Gaal has decided against making Radamel Falcao’s loan move permanent after a disappointing campaign and has gone on to join Premier League champions, Chelsea.

United are reportedly eager to bring in one world class striker in the summer with; Harry Kane, Edinson Cavani, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale all at the top Van Gaal’s wish list.
