Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is thrilled with Luke Shaw after the left-back returned to pre-season training having lost half a stone over summer, according to Steve Bates in the Sunday People.

Shaw, who is still only 19, was put on his own personal intense fitness regime by Van Gaal when the season finished.

Shaw missed out on Euros but van Gaal delighted

This prevented the young left-back featuring in last month's Under-21 European Championships, however the move paid off as Shaw returned to training this week over three kilos lighter.

After last season's worries of Shaw being deemed as not fit enough when he joined the club last summer, Van Gaal deemed it necessary to completely review the youngster's training schedule.

The Dutchman's review over Shaw's special fitness programme was also to prevent a reoccurrence of numerous injuries which limited the English defender to merely 16 apperaances in the Premier League last season.

After signing for United for a fee close to £30m, Shaw was unable to make an impression at Old Trafford last season, although he showed moments of his massive potential against the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.

Van Gaal wants Shaw to become an integral and consistent part of his side despite openly critising the young left-back.

Van Gaal desperate to maximise Shaw potential

The United manager is desperate to maximise Shaw's potential, and to do so he asked the sports science and medical departments at United's Carrington training facility to design a special programme to enhance Shaw's athletic development.

The £27m signing will be looking to cement his left-back place in United's side next season, but he'll have to fight off competition from Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind.

With the European Championships in France also looming next summer, Shaw will be looking to force his way into the senior England national side. The 19-year-old has already made four appearances under Roy Hodgson in an England shirt.
