It's another win for Manchester United on the road in the United States of America and a lot more has been learnt about this new side that Louis van Gaal has assembled, a mixture of youth and great expense.

Luke Shaw's training has paid off massively

Luke Shaw admitted that he had chosen to undergo a training program by himself before the rest of the squad joined for pre-season. It appears to have brought great rewards for the 20-year-old. People forget his young age but with the latest improvements, they'll be stunned by his potential now he has put the effort in to lose weight.

In his first half appearance, the stronger United side selected by van Gaal, Shaw looked full of energy and pace, combining brilliantly well with both Ashley Young and Memphis Depay on the left flank.

Half way through that first period, van Gaal recognised this pace and ambition to get forward at every opportunity from Shaw. He moved Juan Mata on to the left flank so that Shaw could use the overlap at every chance, having before nullified Young's impact by doing so.

Shaw looks fantastic, full of pace, full of energy and mostly full of potential after a difficult first year at the club.

Manchester United have unnatural strikers if all else fails

Both Memphis Depay and Andreas Pereira had chances to prove they could play in the central forward position, and both finished chances in the 45 minutes they had.

Memphis looked just as good as in his debut last week against Club America, involved with every attack and continuing an excellent partnership he struck with Wayne Rooney in that debut.

His goal came as he gained confidence with United in the lead. That confidence, never really missing from Memphis, saw his pounce on a loose pass backwards from San Jose before excellent technique in terms of body shape meant he could curl the ball round the keeper very well, much like you would expect Rooney to do himself.

Pereira, too, scored a goal much like Rooney or someone like Benzema, who United are consistently linked with. A wonderful cross from Jesse Lingard was met by Pereira who headed down into the right bottom corner.

Both Memphis and Pereira may not be ideal to fill the gap in van Gaal's striker department but both can do a job well there, both scoring and both constantly involved in the action.

Pereira is taking chance better than hoped for

Any watched of Manchester United's U21 side knows the quality of Pereira but often these brilliant players come through the ranks before fizzling out to a lower level of football away from United.

Pereira doesn't look like doing that. After just 90 minutes of football he is being hugely praised, not only for scoring his first goal for the senior side but also creating chances whereever he plays.

That is a key part. Despite being right footed, he put in more than most players on the pitch to ensure his being positioned on the left hand side didn't nullify his presence on the pitch. This was noted, his excellence in all positions remembered after that game against Club America. Then Van Gaal moved him into his favoured position playing off the striker, where again, he excelled.

He may have had to wait a long time for his chance under van Gaal in the first place, but now it has come he has taken it by the metaphorical scruff of the neck, and yanked the neck out of its socket.

Fellaini losing out after stupid dismissal

What was embarassing for Marouane Fellaini in United's final game of the season against Hull City was the lack of composure and the sillyness in his red card. A rash challenge earned him his marching orders and now he is paying a bigger price than expected.

The first three Premier League matches were out of the question but Fellaini has now missed two consecutive pre-season games due to van Gaal not wanting to waste the four games he has on a player who will not feature until September.

Morgan Schneiderlin shone on his debut, scoring early into it against Club America, while Bastian Schweinsteiger looked brilliant at the base of midfield on early Wednesday morning, conducting the game in the second half against San Jose Earthquakes.

Michael Carrick, too, has looked good without having to focus on the defensive side of his game. Meanwhile, Ander Herrera has continued his fine form in the red of United.

Through all of this, Fellaini has sat on the bench with nothing to do but twiddle his thumbs or bounce his afro before having a cool down at the end of the game, not involved with the post-match team talk.

This absence in pre-season could prove huge in Fellaini's future at Old Trafford. With four midfielders performing excellently already for United, and Daley Blind playing at centre-back, Fellaini could be spending a lot more time on the bench in the coming year due to one silly suspension.
