Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that he may leave the club at the end of his contract to keep a promise he made to his wife.

The 63-year-old was asked if he would extend his stay at Old Trafford beyond 2017, however he told BBC Sport that he intends to “give it up” at the end of his contract.

When asked the reason for the decision he said that it was down to his wife, he said that they don’t have “many years together anymore.”

Van Gaal mainly focused on the present in his press conference and one of the topics was former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 30-year-old has been heavily linked with a move back from Real Madrid for the past few summers and the Dutchman admitted that the Portuguese international is the type of player that United need to compete with their rivals.

Van Gaal admits Ronaldo would be great signing

He wouldn’t be drawn to say that the forward would make a move to Old Trafford but he said it would be regarded as the Holy Grail signing for fans saying: “I can imagine that. He is a fantastic player, I like him.”

Van Gaal went to speak about his captain Wayne Rooney, the 29-year-old skipper was United’s top scorer last season with 14 goals, but he said that he must improve if he is to play as a lone striker as planned this season.

Van Gaal said that the England international has “to score the amount of goals that Aguero gets.”

The last time Rooney scored 25 goals in a season was back in 2011-12 but Van Gaal believes he has to “prove he can do it” and has “full confidence” that he can.
