Manchester United’s pre-season tour of America and International Champions Cup campaign ended on a negative note as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to French side Paris Saint-Germain.

United return to England with three wins and one loss

Zlatan Ibrahimović and Memphis Depay both had early opportunities before Blaise Matuidi gave the Ligue 1 side the lead, the Swedish striker then doubled their lead ten minutes before the break. Juan Mata and Edison Cavani both had good opportunities early in the second period, but neither could capitalise on their chances. Ibrahimović had an opportunity for his second towards the end of the match but couldn’t add to the score line

Goalkeeper David De Gea was nearly left red-faced just two minutes in when his attempted clearance fell straight to PSG striker Ibrahimović but the Swedish striker couldn’t take advantage of the gift as he hit shot over the bar.

Memphis had two excellent opportunities to give United the lead, the first came in the 12th minute when Wayne Rooney teed up the Dutchman just outside the area with shit looking destined for the bottom corner but new signing Kevin Trapp got down well to keep out the effort. Four minutes later Rooney set up Memphis again but this time his attempt is off target.

Ibrahimović had a better second opportunity in the 20th minute when Lucas Moura hit a cross into the area but like his first attempt it was wide of the mark.

Matuidi gives PSG the lead

The French side took the lead on the quarter-hour mark, Maxwell hit a perfectly weighted lofted ball over the United defence into the feet of Matuidi who did well to hold off Phil Jones before hitting to the side of the oncoming De Gea and into an empty net.

Ibrahimovic makes and scores the second

United were finding it difficult the French side’s defence in the search for an equaliser and it went from bad to worse when they doubled their lead ten minutes before the break. Ibrahimović started off the move carrying it forward before playing out to Maxwell who was in acres of space and hit a great low cross straight into the feet of the Swede who had a simple tap-in.

Substitute Ander Pereira made an instant impact after his second-half introduction when he cut in from the left before crossing a delicious ball towards Mata at the back post but the Spaniards poor control meant the chance went begging.

Like Pereira, Cavani almost made an instant impact after his introduction in the 56th minute when he snapped up the opportunity after United’s poor throw but the Uruguayan’s effort is saved by sub keeper Sam Johnstone.

Ibrahimović had another excellent opportunity in the 66th minute after Moura and Cavani combining beautifully before the Uruguayan cut it back to his fellow striker however the Swede lazily attempted to lob Johnstone who was off his line but Daley Blind cleared the attempted the effort.

Youngster Pereira had his own opportunity with a little over 10 minutes left to play when Mata played a ball to the back post but the Brazilian’s attempted header was tame and Trapp collected with ease.
