Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has said that Everton defender John Stones should reject a move to Chelsea and move to United instead.

The 21-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge as a long-term replacement to captain John Terry, one bid has already been rejected by Roberto Martinez which is belied to be in the region of £20m with another expected to be made by Jose Mourinho.

Stones needs regular gametime

However the former; West Ham, Leeds, United and QPR man has stated that if he was to make the move to London he won’t be playing “every week” and if you were to tell a young player like Stones to leave a club to sit on the bench you would be a “lunatic”.

Stones, who moved to Goodison Park from Barnsley back in 2013 has gone on to establish himself as one of the best young talents in the English top flight making 44 league appearances and going on to earn four England caps in the process.

The 36-year-old who retired at the end of last season believes that Stones is at that stage of his career where he wants to play every week, which he believes makes United the “right club for him”

United must improve defensively

Stones would be a welcome addition to the United defence according to Ferdinand who believes that Louis Van Gaal needs to make improvements to his back line.

United currently have; Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Jonny Evans, Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett on their books with Daley Blind who is midfielder by nature has been playing in the centre of the defence during pre-season.

However Ferdinand who made 453 appearances during his time at Old Trafford believes that Van Gaal “doesn’t know” his best defence which is a problem in itself as if you don’t get familiarity between defenders, it is difficult to “build foundations” according to Ferdinand.
