Pedro Rodriguez looks to have made a late 11th-hour decision on his future, with a dramatic twist in his fortunes.

For weeks, it had looked like the Spanish winger was destined for Old Trafford, with Manchester United ready to add him to their ever improving squad, as they set about the season ahead.

Now however, it looks as though Jose Mourinho's Chelsea side is set to pip Louis Van Gaal to the Spaniard, at the last minute.

The BBC are reporting this afternoon, that the Blues have agreed a £21million deal with the 28 year-old. Pedro is reportedly flying to London to finalise terms on the deal.

Pedro was part of the fabled La Masia stable which included the likes of Lionel Messi, Cesc Fabregas et al and has scored 99 goals in 326 appearances since his debut in 2008. Only this past June Rodriguez signed a new contract, making him a Barca player until 2019.

A panic buy for Chelsea?

The champions start to the 2015/16 campaign has not been flattering for Mourinho's side. With only two goals in as many games, is a move for Pedro a measure to remedy the situation?

Pedro has been tentatively linked to Stamford Bridge, but the bulk of talk has of been of a move to Manchester, with his playing time significantly reduced in the light of Barcelona and Luis Enrique's new front three of Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar Jr

With Juan Cuadrado's arrival from Fiorentina in January having been a resounding flop, with the Colombian failing to yet score a league goal, will Pedro fit onto the right of midfield or could Rodriguez play in a more advanced role with Eden Hazard?

Van Gaal uncertainties

It is possible that Pedro has shunned Manchester United, due to Van Gaal's uncertain style and methods. Also a key consideration would have been where he might fit into the United set-up.

Pedro may well just become another bench player if he is not a success in a 4-2-3-1 formation - as indeed he may at Chelsea. Barcelona have played with a front three more often than not, during the last few seasons.

Such is the excess of talent on the sidelines with the likes of Ander Herrera and Adnan Januzaj, Pedro may find himself out of the starting eleven, if not a hit.

Memphis' performance versus Brugge a decisive factor?

It may be a coincidence, but has Memphis Depay's performance on Tuesday night versus Club Brugge swayed any decision? The Dutch prodigy scored twice and assisted Marouane Fellaini's stoppage time header, to put one United one foot into the group stages of the Champions League. Depay is also a similar player to Pedro and is unlikely to be shifted by the Spaniard.

With Pedro off the radar, more targets are likely to be sought, but with less than two weeks until the transfer window slams shut, Louis Van Gaal needs to work fast.
