A late Ashley Young strike helped Manchester United to three points at St James Park against a Newcastle United side struggling to find form, when the sides last met.

The win gave the Red Devils a huge boost in their bid to return to the Champions League, an objective which was reached by the end of the season.

The Magpies travel to United for today’s lunchtime kick–off hoping for a better outcome than the result in March, but Newcastle have not won all three points at Old Trafford since 2013.

Spit-gate

The game back in March was made controversial when United defender Jonny Evans and Newcastle forward Papiss Cisse appeared to spit at each-other in a first half heated exchange which led to both receiving suspensions.

However, the game did light up when the home side brought on Jonas Gutierrez during the second half for his first match in 17 months. The midfielder had overcome testicular cancer and had a hard battle to get back into football.

Gutierrez received a standing ovation from both sets of fans on his return to Premier League football and somewhat lifted the 45,000 Geordies in the ground to push their team to get all three points.

Young the star

In the dying moments of the game, Louis van Gaal’s men went searching for the winner and a little pressure from Wayne Rooney forced Newcastle to go back to keeper Tim Krul, whose poor pass fell straight to Ashley Young who had an open goal to aim at.

The victory in Newcastle was the start of an impressive run for the Red Devils, who acquired fourth position ahead of rivals Liverpool, but for Newcastle, their poor run would continue and they managed to avoid relegation to the Championship on the final day of the season with victory over West Ham.
