Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal gave a very straight and uninformative answer on whether the club are interested in Barcelona's Neymar, as some reports have suggested.

English newspapers picked up the story earlier this week and despite Neymar's agent denying the odd, and ridiculous, rumour and common sense defying such a move, van Gaal was still asked about it.

Van Gaal refuses to speak about Neymar rumours

Van Gaal told reporters that "you can ask about all the players in the world", including Neymar, but he has "to protect the interests of Manchester United" which means "the players in the selected and the people in the organisation."

This means that the fans and reporters "can mention every player" but no matter what the situation is, he "cannot answer these questions."

Neymar has already won the treble at Barcelona since joining in 2013, scoring 54 times in 92 appearances for the Champions League winners.

Neymar part of football's best trio, alongside Messi and Suarez

He's assisted 26 times, combining with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez to form one of the best trios that football, in every sense, has ever seen.

United are struggling to find goals from their current set of forwards and still look far away from challenging for the Premier League title despite signing five players.

Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Matteo Darmian, Sergio Romero and Memphis Depay have all played excellently since signing this summer but Wayne Rooney is struggling as a lone striker, failing to score so far this season.

The Reds hosted Newcastle United in Saturday's early Premier League kick-off but despite looking good, quick and slick, in the opening stages, dropped two points in a 0-0 draw against the Magpies.

Memphis Depay has been labeled as a star that will, in future, be on the same level as Neymar, and has already scored twice this season - both against Club Brugge in the Champions League - as well as providing that excitement that gets fans on the edge of their seats when he picks up the goal.
