Manchester United made the return to the Champions League group stages after thumping Club Brugge with a 4-0 win in the return leg of the qualifier. United finished the tie with an aggregate score of 7-1. The Red Devils started the match dominantly as they kept the possession and gradually got the reward for it as they ended the first half with 1-0.

They came all guns blazing in the second half as they scored 3 goals in less time to take the tie beyond the reach of Club Brugge. All players had a decent outing but who was the man of the match?

Another cleansheet for the defence

Sergio Romero (7/10)

Romero had nothing to do in most parts of the game. He made a crucial save in first half by tipping the ball over the bar. Romero also showed immense composure while dealing a one on one situation. His distribution is still a worry as he hardly finds any United player with his long balls.

Luke Shaw (7/10)

Shaw continued his impressive form in this game. The Englishman was caught out of position at times, but his pace was enough to compensate those mistakes. He worked hard on the left flank and linked up well with Memphis Depay. He could have grabbed his first United goal as he came very close in the initial part of the game.

Chris Smalling (7/10)

Smalling delivered another effective performance. The defender dealt well with every problem caused by the opponent strikers. He played the ball well from the back and also dropped in the midfield to play some crisp passes. The England international continues to gain confidence with his calm performances.

Daley Blind (6/10)

Blind was the weakest link in the back four, though no damage was caused. He was caught out of position many times and his pace let him down while tracking back. He was impressive in terms of moving the ball as he tried to play key passes to find the attacking players.

Matteo Darmian (7/10)

The former Torino man continued to show that he could be the bargain buy of this summer. The Italian defended very well both along the ground as well as aerially. He provided the width on the right flank and was impressive while going forward.

A composed Midfield

Michael Carrick (8/10)

The veteran kept the play ticking in the midfield. He was composed on the ball and occasionally found the attacking players with a killer pass. He shielded the defence well and made some very interceptions.A vintage performance by Carrick.

Ander Herrera (7/10)

The Spaniard got his first start of this season. Herrera didn’t start well as he lost the ball unnecessarily and also got himself in the book for a rash tackle. After half time he played a bit more of an advanced role and he thrived there as he was able to set up Wayne Rooney’s second goal. He himself got his name on the scoresheet after sometime with a composed finish.

Adnan Januzaj (6/10)

The Belgian endured a quiet game. He was promising initially as he showed some nice touches but faded away as the game went on. He lost the ball frequently and was eventually substituted at the stroke of half time.

The attacking trio clicked well

Memphis Depay (8/10)

The Dutch winger carried on from where he left it on last week againt Club Brugge. Depay was a menace on the left flank as kept on taking on defenders and tried to create space for shooting. He grabbed one beautiful assist in first half which broke the deadlock. It was another promising display from the Dutch youngster.

Juan Mata (7/10)

Mata had a quiet outing as he was largely anonymous in the first half. He linked up well with Darmian and tried to find Rooney with his through balls. After half time he played well as he got more involved in the game and came more centrally to create chances. He set up Rooney’s third goal with nice bit of skill and a delicate pass.

Wayne Rooney (9/10)

The best player on the pitch as he grabbed his first goal of the season. He then followed it with two more goals in second half to complete an impressive hattrick. Rooney made good runs in the box and held his position ahead rather than dropping deep which helped him getting promising positions. A perfect performance to boost his confidence.
