Scottish Premiership champions Celtic have signed Manchester United's young centre-back Tyler Blackett on a season-long loan.

21-year-old Blackett made his way into the United first team last season, appearing twelve times under Louis van Gaal as the Reds often faced injury criss in the defensive derpartment.

Blackett leaves on loan, months after signing new deal

Blackett signed a contract extension at Old Trafford in February 2015 and will be hoping that this loan move can prove his worth to the Reds. He's also been called up to the England under-21 side.

On his move to the Hoops, Blackett says he is "very delighted to be here and" is "just excited to get started". The English centre-back was presented to the Celtic crowd at halftime in their fixture against St Johnstone, and says he can "see that the fans have been great" and he's sure "they will be great all season".

Before breaking into the United first team, Blackett had two loan spells at Birmingham City and Blackpool. While Blackett has been loaned out, fellow centre-back Paddy McNair is set to stay around the first team at United, indicating who Van Gaal believes has the greater potential.

United hoping to continue good season against Swansea

United have had a great season so far, and will attempt to sustain an unbeaten record when they travel to the Liberty Stadium. Last season they were defeated 2-1 by Swansea City twice and van Gaal hopes that this time they can avenge both defeats.

Fellow title challengers Liverpool and Chelsea both suffered surprising defeats in their Saturday games, leaving United with a good chance to capitalise and move into second place with a win.

Celtic top of Scottish Premiership, out of Champions League

Meanwhile, Celtic are top of the Scottish Premiership after 16 points in six games this season. Goals from Leigh Griffiths, Tom Rogic and Charlie Mulgrew saw them have the perfect win to get over a loss in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers against Malmo, putting them out of the competition.
