The Manchester United quartet of Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney have been named in the England squad for the upcoming fixtures against San Marino and Switzerland.

Rooney gunning for record

United skipper Rooney has not been in the best of form so far this campaign but will be looking to create history over the next two weeks.

The 29-year-old currently sits just one goal behind legend Sir Bobby Charlton on 49 and will be looking to become the highest goal scorer in the history of the England national side.

Shaw returns

Shaw was recalled to the England fold after making an impressive start to the season and proved one of the few bright sparks in United’s 2-1 defeat at Swansea City on Sunday.

The 20-year-old looks to have come on leaps and bounds from last year which proved to be a very disappointing debut campaign at Old Trafford which was dogged by injuries and lack of fitness. This is set to be Shaw’s first appearance in Roy Hodgson’s side since the 0-0 draw with Costa Rica at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Shelvey and Vardy recalled

The big talking point of Hodgson’s squad announcement was the return of Jonjo Shelvey and Jamie Vardy.

The Swansea midfielder had only made on appearance previously for the Three Lions back in 2012 against minnows San Marino, but an impressive start for Gary Monk’s side has earned him a place.

Hodgson said that Shelvey was getting “another chance” as he had a “very impressive” start to the season.

It has been a similar story for Vardy, the Leicester City forward made his England bout last season in the goalless draw with the Republic of Ireland and two goals in Leicester’s excellent start to the season has seen him return.

England will face San Marino on Saturday, September 5 before playing Switzerland on Tuesday, September 8.
