Former-Manchester United player Phil Neville has said that the signing of AS Monaco striker Anthony Martial could be better than signing more well-known striker Edinson Cavani.

Neville praises incoming United striker Anthony Martial, who he faced in Champions League

The 19-year-old French striker has completed a medical at United and Neville, who is now assistant manager at La Liga side Valencia, says that Martial "was unplayable at times" when Neville faced him in a UEFA Champions League qualifier.

Monaco lost against Valencia in that qualifier to mean they will not be in the Champions League, but Martial will be with United qualifying against Club Brugge that same week. Neville says that the young striker, who will cost around £36million, "has strength, pace" and "everything you could look for" in a young striker.

Martial continually caused panic for Neville, coach at Valencia

When Neville had to find a way to stop him at Monaco in August, "he kept drifting out to the left and causing us [Valencia] problems." United fans love players who they know will do something extraordinary when they get the ball and Neville suggests Martial is one of those players. "Everytime he [Martial] got the ball [against Valencia] your heart was in your mouth."

The big praise from Neville, who was part of the Class of '92 side that eventually won the treble in 1999, was that he thinks "he's a better bet than spending the same on Edinson Cavani [PSG striker] or someone similar."

Martial is a better signing than more experienced Cavani, says United legend

Martial is "proper signing" according to Neville, and the big money move to United is expected to be announced before the transfer deadline at 6PM on Tuesday 1st September.
