England national team and Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has broken his leg in the opening UEFA Champions League game against Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven.

The 19-year-old has had a fantastic season for both United and his country so far, becoming an integral member of the side and looking certain to make the England squad for the 2016 European Championships.

Moreno challenge sees Shaw break leg

Yet a strong, reckless challenge from PSV's Hector Moreno, who joined the Dutch champions this summer, saw Shaw's right leg snap at the shin in a nasty-looking manner.

The talented youngster will be out for months, possibly hurting his chances of making the England squad for the Euros next summer. He had played all six of United's opening games of the season, making his seventh appearance of the season in Eindhoven.

He made his fifth and sixth appearance for England against San Marino and Switzerland and was one of the best players on the pitch in 6-0 and 2-0 wins respectively for his nation.

Shaw having stunningly good season for club and country

Moreno's challenge saw no punishment despite being in the penalty area after an impressive run from the left flank from Shaw and into the 18-yard-box.

United were making their return to the UEFA Champions League after missing out on it for the first time in more than a decade last season. They are in a group with PSV as well as CSKA Moscow and VfL Wolfsburg.

Shaw will be hoping to return before the end of the season to earn a place in the England squad but the young left-back will have no set date and simply be looking to get back to fitness.

Confirmation on his injury is likely to follow in the coming days from Manchester United Football Club.
