Luke Shaw has vowed to return stronger after he suffered a horrific leg break in Manchester United's UEFA Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven.

Shaw, 19, snapped his leg after a reckless challenge in the penalty area from PSV's summer signing Hector Moreno.

Moreno went unpunished for his challenge on Shaw, who had come in from the left flank on a superb, powerful run. Yet physios had to be on the pitch for almost ten minutes, moving 19-year-old Shaw onto a strecther and giving him an oxygen defribilator.

The youngster had been in superb form for United, playing in all of the opening seven games and standing out in a strong defence. He also stood out in 6-0 and 2-0 wins over San Marino and Switzerland respectively for England during the international break in early September.

Just hours after his injury, which saw United manager Louis van Gaal roll his head backwards in annoyance, Shaw took to Twitter to express his desire to return stronger.

Shaw thanks fans and players for messages following injury

Shaw said "thank you everyone for your messages, words can't describe how gutted I am, my road to recovery starts now" and "I will come back stronger."

Meanwhile, former-teammates and fellow footballers have also taken to social media to give the young left-back their best wishes.

Fellow England international Ross Barkley tweeted, "thinking of you lad @LukeShaw23 hope you have a speedy recovery..."

Another England player and Shaw's former-teammate at Southampton, Fraser Forster said, "Gutted for you @LukeShaw23. Wishing you a speedy recovery."

Shaw was sent to hospital immediately after the injury and could be out for the rest of the season.
